With any luck a LineageOS 15.0 custom for the Galaxy S6 might bring the sweetness of Oreo to the device. Mostly, all Galaxy S6 sets have been update to Nougat OS, which also happens to be the last big update for the device. Though, right now, Samsung has released the Android 7.0 build of Nougat, so we hope the Korea mobile giant follows it up with Android 7.1.1 OTA rollout pretty soon.

For the users of Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Plus, the Oreo update is something that they may have to look upon with lots of envy — as theirs is a Samsung flagship device of yesteryear for which the support as regards major Android update drops now.

Galaxy Note 5 Oreo eligibility and release info

The much-loved Galaxy Note 5 is now well over two years old and has also already received two major Android OS updates in Marshmallow and Nougat. So, there is no chance Samsung would bring the Oreo to Note 5. But wait, T-Mobile says the Oreo update is in manufacturer development. Wait, what? Really? If you have a S8/S8+ in US, you can install Oreo even without needing to register under the beta program — sweet hack!

A new month and as we’ve come to expect from Google over the years, a new software update is out for the Pixel duo of 2017. Just a day into April and Verizon users of the Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL are already being greeted with the monthly software update, which obviously comes inclusive of the April security patch from Google.

Now that the Galaxy S6 Edge is more than two years old, it has reached the end of life stage. Which basically means that Samsung would not release an Oreo update for the Galaxy S6 Edge. Usually, OEMs do not provide software update after 18 months for a device, or 24 months if the device we’re talking about is a flagship one, like the Galaxy S6 Edge here. But given the fact has S6 Edge is way older now, over the flagship eligibility period of the update too, it’s obvious from Samsung to not plan the Android 8.0 Oreo update for the device.

However, we do expect the usual security patches to roll out as an OTA monthly or bi-monthly, and a last big update to Android 7.1.1 sometime in October 2017.

Google has created a Security Bulletin that releases a general security update every month, and understandably, the Pixel and Nexus devices are the first one to receive them. Over the past few years, certain Android OEMs have begun keeping up the pace with Google by releasing security updates in the first week of every month, but not all mainstream brands have been a part of this movement.

In cases of network-locked devices, the software update can take even longer, as it the case with U.S. telecom companies Verizon and Sprint, which are only now releasing the month-old May security patch for the flagship Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+.

Carrying build numbers G960USQU2ARE6 and G965USQU2ARE6 for the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ respectively, both at Verizon and Sprint (S9|S9+) the update seems to bring nothing apart from the security bump.

Additionally, Verizon is also rolling out the same May security patch as an update to the seemingly forgotten LG Stylo 2 from 2016. The mid-carder from LG never saw the light of the day after Android 6.0 Marshmallow but is currently receiving the latest security update with build number VS83520i and nothing more than the security patch with it.

Samsung has never held a glowing reputation for bringing out major software updates even to the premium devices, which is apparent, considering that the Galaxy S8 and S8+ were one of the last Android OEM flagships to receive the update. Verizon is rolling out software updates for the new Samsung handsets in the budget range, the Galaxy J3 V 3rd Gen and Galaxy J7 V 2nd Gen handsets. Verizon reveals that the software patch on the devices has been updated to July 2018.

Identified as model no. SM-J337V and SM-J737V respectively, their prepaid variants go by the model nos. SM-J337VPP and SM-J737VPP, which also happen to be receiving their first update today.

It took a while, but Verizon Wireless is now rolling out Android 8.0 Oreo update for its Galaxy J7 handset. Both the prepaid and postpaid variant of the Verizon Galaxy J7 are received OTA update to Android 8.0.

The software version of the Oreo update for the standard Galaxy J7 (SM-J727V) is J727VVRU2BRH1 while that for the prepaid Galaxy J7 is J727VVPRU2BRH1. Besides an upgrade to Oreo, the BRH1 build also packs in August 2018 security patch.

Verizon now also sells a new Galaxy J7 handset whose model no. is SM-J737V, which already comes installed with Android Oreo and should be receiving an upgrade to Android 9 from Samsung in Q3 2019. As of SM-J727V model that is receiving Oreo today, we don’t think it’s eligible for Android Pie update.

Thanks to Oreo update, the Galaxy J7 (2017) users at Verizon can now enjoy some cool features like picture-in-picture, revamped notifications center, new settings app, notification dots, Autofill, notification snooze, and more.

But that’s not all: Thanks to Samsung Experience 9.0 custom skin that you find with Samsung’s Oreo update, the Galaxy J7 also gets Dual messenger feature that allows you to use two apps (WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.) on the device. Samsung is also adding a high contrast mode for the Keyboard app, which should help many people, while the Phone app is getting a design makeover. Verizon is also cutting down on the bloatware, axing the apps like NFL, Slacker Radio, and VZ Navigator, but if you want them, you can have them on the Google Play Store.

The Oreo update is being rolled out gradually to all the eligible J7 handsets already. Your Galaxy J7 will get the notification when it becomes eligible. To install the Oreo update, you only need to tap on the notification and then tap on the Install now button on the update pop-up. You can also defer the update for installation at a later time.

You can manually check for the Oreo OTA on your Verizon Galaxy J7 by opening the Settings app > About device > Software updates, and then tap on Check for updates button.

In the last few days, Samsung’s been on the roll, releasing Oreo update for the Galaxy J7 Core/Nxt, Galaxy J7 2017,  Galaxy Xcover 4, Galaxy J7 Pop, Galaxy J5 Prime, and Galaxy J5 Pro.

Motorola’s Moto E5 Play doesn’t receive monthly software updates, which makes every other update the device gets quite a big deal. The latest version rolling out to the Verizon Wireless model is just one example, where the update not only improves the security patch level of the budget phone but also fixes annoying bugs and improves the overall system stability.

The update is rolling out as version ODP27.91-121 and in addition to installing August 2018 security patch, users of the Moto E5 Play also get Bluetooth service fix that helps avoid malicious app attacks; improved speaker performance when playing media where ringtone audio will ramp when media is being played through the speakerphone; better audio in recorded videos; fix for mobile hotspot stability issues; and a fix for issues with calls where one couldn’t see who was calling when the device is locked or in landscape orientation.

As you’d expect from such an update, Moto E5 Play users should also enjoy a more stable software experience after this update. But being airborne, it will take a few days before all units get the download notification, so don’t fret if you haven’t been notified to download the new update by now.

After rolling out Android Oreo update to the LG G5 in Korea a few weeks ago, LG is now rolling out the same update to the T-Mobile and Verizon variants in the U.S. This is the second major OS upgrade for the 2016 handset that debuted with Marshmallow and while the wait has been long, it’s finally here.

None of T-Mobile or Verizon has updated their software update pages with the latest Android Oreo news for the LG G5, but users of the phones on these carriers can report that the update is indeed available for download. This means that you’ll have to wait for some time before the OTA download notification arrives on your phone, but there are also other ways you can grab this OS and install it right now on your LG G5, at least for T-Mobile users.

You can install the update using TWRP or LG Bridge, whichever suits you. More details about the Verizon update can be found here, but as seen below, the OTA is rolling out.

In the update, you’ll come across things like PiP, notification channels and snoozing, background app optimizations and many other Oreo-related additions, but there’s also a new Android security patch for the month of August 2018.

As noted, a good number of Verizon users are reporting that the OTA notification has started showing up, so we expect the same to happen not only for T-Mobile users, but also for others using the handset on AT&T.

Have a Samsung Galaxy Tab E from Verizon laying around the house? Well, then we have a bit of good news for you. An Android 8.0 Oreo-touting Galaxy Tab E has just received certification at the Wi-Fi alliance today.

It’s listed as model number SM-T378V, which is the Verizon Tab E model. So this means that the tablet could start receiving the update as soon as next month. You’d better keep your fingers crossed!

The tablet ran Android 7.1.1 Nougat out of the box at launch, so obviously it’s eligible to get the Oreo update. Which for Verizon users, seems to be incoming. So make sure you keep an eye on your tablet, in case any new notifications pop up alerting you a new system update is available.

What about the Android 9 Pie update? Forget about it, the Galaxy Tab E is a pretty old device, and it still has to get the Oreo update.

The ASUS Zenfone V Live at Verizon is getting bumped up to Android 8.0 Oreo. The update arrives as software version V15.0405.1808.30 and weirdly includes only the August 2018 security patch, not the September one.

The ASUS Zenfone V Live launched back in 2017 with Android 7.1 Nougat out of the box and now Verizon is offering users the option to update their handsets to Android 8.0 Oreo.

The new build brings all the goodies that Oreo is known for including Picture-in-Picture mode, App categories, Text Field Form Autofill, as well as revamped notifications.

The carrier recommends ensuring that your battery is fully charged on your device before starting the process of downloading the update. You should also connect the phone to a stable Wi-Fi network or verify it has a strong Verizon Wireless network connection.

It’s been a while since the device hit retail shelves and Verizon is finally offering an upgrade in software experience. But if you’re wondering whether your smartphone will get next update in line, Android 9 Pie, we’re afraid the answer the Zenfone V Live is not eligible to receive it.

The Moto G6 Play at Verizon is currently in the process of receiving its first update. The new build will bump the software version on the device to version ODPS27.91-106-4-2 and brings the September security patch.

The previous software on the device was ODP27.91-106-4 and it was on July patch.

In the changelog, Verizon says that “the current software update gives you the most up to date Android security patches on your device.” But given that we’re in October, the September patch does seem reasonable although the October patch is rolling out to many devices already.

Other than the new software patch, the update doesn’t bring any other improvements to the table for Moto G6 Play owners. The carrier says to make sure you connect to a Wi-Fi network or a strong Verizon Wireless network connection before starting the download. On top of that, you’ll want to ensure your battery is fully charged (read: above 50%).

But what about the Android Pie update you might be wondering at this point? Motorola already confirmed that all Moto G6 models including the standard G6, G6 Plus and Moto G6 Play will eventually get the Android 9 update.

The company announced this in August and since then we’re yet to see the company roll out the update for any of the devices included in the list. Obviously, flagships like the Moto Z3 and Moto Z2 Force Edition are bound to get it first, so if you own the Moto G6 Play you’ll still have some waiting to do.

Remember when Verizon used to sell Nokia phones? Well according to reliable leaker Evan Blass, the carrier will do so once again, and soon.

Big Red has apparently partnered up with HDM Global for the release of the Nokia 2.1V, which will most likely be identical to the Nokia 2.1 which launched a few months ago.

It seems that HMD is ready to turn its full attention to the US market next, hence the collaboration with America’s biggest carrier.

The Nokia 2.1 is an entry-level Android Go phone, which comes equipped with a large 4,000 mAh battery. The device sports a 5.5-inch display with the classical 16:9 aspect ratio and offers the mediocre 720p resolution.

The smartphone is powered by a decent Snapdragon 425 and is backed up by 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage. It ships with the lightweight Android 8.1 Oreo Go Edition, but it will presumably get Pie at some point.

Blass doesn’t say when we can expect the Nokia 2.1V to make a debut into the wild, but since this official-looking render leaked we can expect for it to happen pretty soon.

Samsung has started rolling out One UI beta based on Android 9 Pie in Korea, one of the markets that had been promised early access to the software. Others are the U.S. and Germany, which should join the party in the next few hours or days for that matter.

As for Europe, China and India, the update will begin rolling out in the next few days.

Regions that are not taking part in the beta program will have to wait until January 2019, which is when the stable One UI based on Android 9 Pie will begin rolling out to the public.

There are four methods by which you can download and install the abovementioned update on your phones. In the Wi-Fi only OTA method, your phone automatically downloads the update whenever it is connected to a Wi-Fi network. You do not have to worry about interruptions as the phone resumes downloading from where it left off once it gets Wi-Fi coverage again. Once the download is complete, you’ll receive a prompt asking permission to install. The phone reboots before the installation process begins.

Another method involves the phone alerting you that a new update is available. It will ask your permission to install, which once accepted your phone will automatically reboot. You’ll need to tap on “OK” once the phone’s back on to install the update. If you choose to “Defer”, then you’ll need to make use of the third alternative of installing the update.

The third method involves you manually searching for the available update. Simply tap on the “Settings” icon, then choose “About phone”, followed by “Software updates” and then finally tap on “Check for updates”. If a new update is available, tap on “Download now”. Once it’s done, tap on “Install now” option and then “OK” once the device has rebooted.

You can also choose to download the update through your computer having a stable internet connection if your phone isn’t connected to Verizon Wireless network. Simply connect your device to the computer and download the Software Upgrade Assistant tool on your computer which will initiate the process.
